- Aurum Met
- Belladonna
- Lachesis
- Lycopodium
- Nitric Acid
Before we come to the indications suggesting the use of these medicines for the treatment of inguinal hernia, let us understand the problem a little better.
What is a hernia?
A hernia means the protrusion of any tissue or internal organ through the muscle wall. Hernia may occur in many regions, some of them being the inguinal region or umbilical region or hiatus or femoral region. The protruding contents cause swelling and put pressure on other organs, depending upon the area where they are present.
What is an inguinal hernia?
When the intestine or a part of it or even some belly fat protrudes through the muscle of the lower abdominal wall in your groin area, we call it inguinal hernia. This is the wall that separates the abdomen from the groin. Since these occur in the groin region, we also call them groin hernias. This is the area around the pelvis. There are two inguinal canals on either side of the pelvis, where the inguinal hernias can occur. Out of all hernias, inguinal hernias are the most common.
What causes Inguinal Hernias?
As I have mentioned earlier, an inguinal hernia occurs when an organ or tissue pushes through the abdominal wall. There could be many reasons for this. One is that the abdominal wall might be weak. This weakness might be present since the time of birth or develop later on due to different reasons. Another reason is that there could be excess pressure within the abdominal cavity which pushes the contents outward. Chronic cough, sneezing or constipation tends to increase pressure inside the abdominal cavity. Pregnancy puts pressure on the abdominal wall. Similarly, strenuous activity increases the intra-abdominal pressure. In some cases, age related degeneration might also lead to weakness of the abdominal wall.
What are the symptoms of Inguinal Hernias?
The main symptom of an inguinal hernia is a bulge in your groin area. This bulge becomes more prominent and visible on standing up or while coughing or sneezing. There may be some pain or discomfort in the groin region, more so while bending forward or lifting a weight. One may even feel heaviness or a dragging down sensation in the groin area. In infants, the hernia may be visible only when crying.
Treatment of inguinal hernia
The treatment of inguinal hernia in the conventional system of medicine is surgery. Since there is no medicine in the conventional system to strengthen the muscles, they put in a mesh which holds the intestinal contents within the abdominal cavity and prevent them from protruding. I regularly come across such patients who have a recurrent hernia after surgery as the very cause which led to the incidence of hernia is still prevalent.
Homeopathic treatment of inguinal hernia
Homeopathic treatment takes a different approach to remedy the situation. It does not rely on external supports. Rather, the homeopathic medicines tend to strengthen the muscles of the abdominal wall. This allows them to hold the intestinal contents within the abdominal cavity.
