If you are suffering from gout or have high uric acid levels, there are a few things that you can do apart from homeopathic treatment for gout, which is very effective. These things pertain to your lifestyle and diet. All of the recommendations are pretty simple to follow. At the same time, they are very effective. So, here is the list of 5 tips for gout or controlling high uric acid.
Reduce high purine diet
As is well known and has been written in detail by me in another article, gout is caused by the deposition of urate crystals in the joints. These urate crystals are a direct result of high uric acid in the blood. Uric acid is formed as a by product of the assimilation of purines. Therefore, it is very important that one should reduce the intake of high purine diet. Certain foods are quite rich in purines and it is best to avoid such things. Red meat, fish, chicken are all rich sources of purines. Organ meat like liver and kidneys are also rich in purine. It is best to avoid these things and in my opinion this is one of the best tips for gout. Earlier, the practice was to advise limiting plant based foods that are rich in proteins like beans, legumes, peas, mushrooms, spinach or cauliflower. Latest research suggests that there is no correlation with plant based foods and high uric acid. So one can safely keep on consuming vegetarian sources of proteins. At the same time, one should avoid intake of sweetened colas.
Increase intake of water
The most important thing that can help in reducing the high uric acid levels happens to be the simplest things of all. It is plain water. Intake of a lot of water can help drain out all sorts of waste products that are present in the body. Uric acid is filtered out by the kidneys in the urine. The excess of uric acid that may be present in the blood is filtered by kidneys and excreted through urine. Therefore drinking lots of water can help flush out the excess uric acid present in the blood. This will prevent the deposition of the urate crystals in the joints.
Limit intake of alcohol
Intake of alcohol, more so in excess is another factor that is the culprit when it comes to increasing the uric acid levels in the blood. All forms of alcohol cause a spike in the uric acid levels. At the same time, research has found that beer is very high in purines and can cause the uric acid levels to increase drastically. Therefore, it is ideal that one should eliminate alcohol completely from one’s routine.
Have high fibre diet, fruits and vegetables
Diet rich in fibre can be quite helpful in controlling uric acid. High fibre diet like green leafy vegetables and whole grains can eliminate uric acid by absorbing it. Fruits, paricularly those that are rich in Vit C are very helpful in controlling the increased levels of uric acid. Cherries, grapes, pineapple, banana and apple should be taken regularly.
Reduce weight and exercise regularly
Being overweight can also add to your problems. It is necessary that one should form a habit of regular exercise. Exercise can help by reducing weight and at the same time stimulating the body’s natural powers to eliminate any waste products that build up. 30-40 minutes of brisk walk or any other form of physical exercise like playing badminton, jogging, skipping or playing golf can help.
With the above mentioned changes in your lifestyle, you can easily keep on the top of your uric acid problem. In the acute phase, you can take homeopathy to tide over the crisis stage. Once the acute phase is over, the regular use of homeopathic medicines and these lifestyle modifications will allow you to live a life completely free from gout as well as the fear of gout.
Dear dr…I have did all this diet before reading this only……like drinking plenty of water having fruits nd doing exercises walking…..nd also frm so many years I left alcohol drinking…
But still sometimes I used to suffer from gout pain.. like sudden swelling nd horrible pain…. Is there any other permanent solution for gout doctor?????
Dear Dr.
I have been getting moderate gout attacks for the past 10 years. I get about 4-8 attacks per year on an average, each lasting 2-3 days. Swelling is moderate and pain is still bearable. The left toe joint is affected 90% of the time, while the right toe joint is affected 10% of the time. There is no swelling in the ankles.
Gout normally subsides with water and lime therapy along with fruit and berries diet.
I take Rum regularly with a lot of lemon juice added to it… no other alcohol. Non veg food 3-5 meals a week– mainly fish and chicken. However, I can cut down on this.
Take about 6 glasses of water a day… trying to double this along with intake of lemon water without sugar.
I do gym workouts thrice a week and pranayam twice a week on an average. I am in AC rooms/ car for most of the day.
Urine becomes dark and a bit smelly at onset of gout.
Would appreciate your advice to eliminate gout permanently.
Thanks and warm regards
